My Hero...

Those of you have been with me since the beginning of Mission;Style may recall where my love for style came from...

Everyone, meet my Nan - AKA Nanny Bear.

Actually, it's not just my love for style that came from my Nan...My strength, energy, grit and pure determination  have also been passed down the genes to make me the woman I am today.

Sadly, my (our) Nan passed away on Friday and although we are struggling with the loss, I can't help but feel her strength...The words " You can't sit 'round like a yard o' tripe..."..

Hence this post - not to be gloomy, no!

I dedicate this post to the most beautiful soul that was my Nan and want to share some little nuggets of her wisdom with you..;

Before you buy anything, give it the crunch.. Yep - take a handful of the fabric and give it a little squeeze, if it creases and doesn't release well then you either want to avoid or, wear with caution.

If you're thinking about it, buy it! You can always change your mind once you get home, don't regret not buying something that may be gone in a few days (this was pre-internet advice but still true).

Always check the washing instructions before you buy... It could take the bargain sale price of that piece through the roof!

Keep your wardrobe tidy/organised and in colour order.

Never underdress.

Keep your hair neat and well kept (and not too long... :-)).

Always wear a vest... Ok, this one just makes me smile. My Nan would always check we wore vests and it became a joke when us (5 granddaughters) got older... She had one hell of a shock one day when she went to check me (at 22) and I had had my belly button pierced.

The list is fairly extensive, these are just a few little snippets.

12 years ago the following note arrived in the post on the most beautiful note paper, since then it's been in my purse, today it has been framed.

" Be Happy Karen, Whatever x"

You will be sorely missed, I'm honoured that you were in our lives and so very proud of the legacy you have left us with.

  1. My heart was breaking reading this...even though she'd want us to be strong and positive and not sit around being all tripe-like :))

I remember her linen advice now (thinking back to us wandering round French Connection!!)- her tips were obviously ledge and sage and many :)))

Sending you all my love and hugs and condolences

    PS Beautiful pic :)

    1. Thank you Darling, that means so much! Well remembered too, that snippet never fails me x

  2. What a lovely, lovely post Karen, your first three quotes reminded of my mother she always said the same.
    Take care of yourself.
    Sue x

    1. Thanks so much Sue, it proves it's such good advice xx

  3. Oh gosh - what a lovely post to celebrate such an important lady in your life. So many truths in what she says and it made me chuckle about your pierced belly button :o)

I think she would have enjoyed this post.

    1. Thank you so much Sue! I'm glad it made you chuckle x

  4. Karen so sorry to hear about your Nan's passing. I was incredibly close to my Grandma who sadly died nearly 16 years ago. Keep remembering the good times & all the lovely memories you shared together as they will keep you strong. I like to think that my Grandma has become my guardian angel & I'm sure your Nan will be watching over you.

    1. Thank you so much Jane! I truly believe that my Nan is already watching down and is also our Guardian Angel xx

  5. Your nan sounds like she was a pretty fabulous lady! I'm so sorry for your loss, but you will always have those wonderful memories to treasure, no-one can take them away. I lost my grandma around 5 years ago now, and I still think about how special she was every day. I also miss her roast beef dinner like mad, no-one else's has ever come close ;-) xx

    1. Thanks Becky, she was indeed! It sounds like your Grandma was too! How lucky were we all to be blessed with amazing grandparents xx

  6. What an absolutely inspirational lady. I know the love you all had for your nan. Hugs xx
